Hyaenidae Sanctuary

Updates from the first North American hyena sanctuary.

Update of sorts

Not much news from the last meeting. Another meeting is planned. That is how the University works I suppose.

In other news we are still working on our 501(c)(3) status. Not much else to report. Progress is slow at the moment.

Great News, With Reservations

Hello all,

What a day!

We dropped off the check with the University: http://lockerz.com/s/182645575

We got through a long meeting with the head of the Berkeley colony. Good news is that NO hyenas will be euthanized. More homes have been located and a more stable funding source has been planned out (planned not achieved). There are still some possibilities it may fall through and another meeting is planned for next week. That meeting will be key on the future of the placement of the animals or continue funding of the research. The hyenas will be alive, that is the end goal of what we strive to achieve.

Short of it: We ask you temporally hold off donations. We will know within 2 weeks if more are necessary.

Why? We will not ask for donations unless crucially needed. Thanks to your donations the emergency aspect of the situation has been addressed, but I cannot say that more donations won’t be needed later.

Our donations have bridged the gap between where their funding ended and the new sources have been initiated. The hyenas are currently past the emergency but not out of the woods until we see what the next meetings hold. The show of support from outside people stepping up and donating to save the hyenas sent a VERY clear message to the powers that be- there is a LOT of love and attention given to those hyenas.

Next week we can say more about the situation because more will be known. Thank you for hanging in there with us!

As for our sanctuary, plans continue to progress on it. We may have it done in time to do some good for the colony after all.

We are also on our way to filing as a charitable organization. Our board has been formed and we have some very talented people on it that compliment each other very well. Look forward to updates.

Next week we will update on the status of the colony and future funding. I hope it all goes well and no further fundraising will be necessary.

Finally!

The account finally got set up to accept donations for the hyenas!! We will be cutting a check in the next day or two and delivering it to the regents. We will be speaking with the project director this week on the status of the fundraising and how many animals have been placed since we last spoke. There are also some good sounds coming from a couple of other folks who want to start a hyena sanctuary as well! We will be speaking with them and finding out if pooling our efforts will be the most effective solution for keeping these guys alive. So quite a few good bits of news!

We are also working on a website that will make it easier to donate and keep up with what is going on. I know tumblr isn’t the best and the donate info has long since moved back in the stream. This week is our goal.

Thank you again for all your support and patience!

Not as much of an update

Still waiting to get the word on who to sign the check to. In the mean time the money keeps growing! We are just over the 3k mark!!

A small issue with the auction. Still ironing it out. The biggest delay is that we want the artists who are contributing their effort happy.

More info to come soon.

More Information

We contacted the Berkeley colony today and we are getting the information on where to send the first check to. They were thrilled about the amount we have raised and they will issue a formal thank you in time. They are extremely busy trying to place hyenas in zoos (which there are more leads on) so things are going well. There is also going to be a formal fundraising drive for the hyenas which means several things, all of them good. I will post a link to the official fundraising drive the instant they push it online!

Also thank you to all of you who have donated! We will try to reply to everyone who has donated with a thank you and to let you know we got the money. We apologize for the delay, it has been a very productive week so far. It looks like the time we are buying the hyenas will really help out!

We still have some auctions to advertise and create so those are coming as well!

Donation from Outside the USA

We are working to get a cost effective solution working for this. My bank wants to charge $16 per transaction for international funds transfers. That is quite a significant cut. I will post the donation link when we have something working. Until then, thank you for your patience and support!

Clarification of Purpose

Hello all,

There seems to be some confusion out there as to who we are and what we are doing.

We are not the Berkeley colony. We are a group of individuals who have set out to create a hyena sanctuary for unwanted hyenas. We have contacts at the Berkeley colony but we have no say over what happens there. We are raising money to buy their hyenas more time so homes can be found and animals placed. All of the donations we have received so far are going directly to them to help buy them time so homes can be found.

Our facility is still on the drawing board and we are rushing to make it a reality. Unless we get a massive donation to build our sanctuary we will not be operational in time to assist the Berkeley colony as a placement home for their hyenas. However zoos and other sanctuaries have been contacted and they are working with the Berkeley folks to place their animals. We are raising money to donate to them to buy them time since finding homes for their animals doesn’t happen over night.

Keeping hyenas alive is our main concern.

I hope that clears up any confusion!

Hyena Photographs

We finally have our prints up!

http://www.flickr.com/photos/hyenasanctuary/sets/72157628935888647/

4x6 glossy photo prints (as seen at FC) are $10

8x10 glossy photo prints are $20

Any other size prints are negotiable. These are thank you gifts for your donation, hence the pricing.

Please donate and email me at m_gardner (at) berkeley.edu as to which photo # you would like and in what size. Make sure I know what donation is yours so I can correctly tie your contribution to your print order.

Matching donations!

A nice jackal named Soulfire made a very generous offer. Matching donations up to $500 a week for a month. So everyone who bought hyena postcard prints at Blotch’s table or donated to us at FC got their donations matched!

Jackals helping hyenas out, how cool is that?!

For those who don’t use dwolla we will have a paypal shortly. Since we do not have our 501(c)3 status yet we will be selling photographic prints of the hyenas for a set cost(payment through dwolla or paypal). ALL proceeds from the prints will go to the hyenas. We pay for the prints and shipping out of our own pocket so 100% of your donation goes to the hyenas.
